Amplifier IC Application Selection Guide
Variable Gain Amplifiers

  vga
Function:

Adjusts the gain of an amplifier chain, often to prevent overdrive of components downstream from the VGA. VGAs are common in systems that need to handle a wide range of signal levels.

  Products
  1. IVA-05, IVA-14 (Power decreases as gain decreases)
These ICs combine a Gilbert cell-based amplifier followed by an active attenuator to form a variable gain amplifier. Full gain is provided when no control voltage is applied. These amplifiers also have very good limiting properties, and have proven extremely useful in fiber optic receivers.
  2. HPMX-3002 (Power control for 800 - 900 MHz frequency range)
  Alternatives
  1. attenuator PIN diodes plus gain stages
  2. attenuator ICs plus gain stages
